What Treatments are Available for TMJ/TMD?

BOTOX for TMJ/TMD

BOTOX is a substance composed of botulinum toxin, a purified compound that derives from bacteria. When it is injected into certain facial muscles, it can temporarily relieve TMJ and jaw tension.

Dr. Amin Samadian and his team may prescribe BOTOX for TMJ following his examination of your trigger pain points as part of his comprehensive, holistic approach to diagnosis and treatment. BOTOX for TMJ may be a viable treatment option in combination with anti-inflammatory drugs, gentle stretches of the jaw and neck, and stress reduction routines. Also, Dr. Samadian may create a custom night guard for you that will put the TMJ in a comfortable position and relieve your symptoms.

Laser TMJ Bio-Stimulation

Laser TMJ treatment uses a controlled mixture of wavelengths to address concerns with the TMJ. While one wavelength decreases inflammation, the other one relieves pain. It’s very effective because it enhances cellular energy and can permit your tissues to absorb nutrients at a quicker rate while increasing blood circulation. It is an excellent way to address the discomfort that usually comes with TMJ without surgery or any negative side effects.

TMJ laser treatment may be prescribed to you if you’re experiencing concerns with TMD and have not found assistance for your symptoms through other treatments or want to avoid the harsh side effects that often come with traditional TMJ medications.

What does TMJ/TMD treatment involve?

If Dr. Samadian and his team prescribe you to receive BOTOX treatment, after careful examination of the muscles and the TMJ itself, Dr. Amin Samadian’s team using a fine needle will inject BOTOX into the muscles that cause the jaw pain and headaches. It is a non-invasive treatment that can be performed in less than half an hour and comes with no downtime.

For Laser TMJ Bio-Stimulation, you’ll relax in a chair while Dr. Samadian’s San Francisco team uses a special device with two wavelengths to perform the treatment. You can expect these wavelengths to pinpoint and obstruct the source of pain and promote cellular repair and growth. This treatment typically only takes about 10 minutes to finish.

Is TMJ/TMD treatment painful?

There is a minuscule amount of pain associated with the BOTOX TMJ Treatment procedure due to the injections, but it is generally insignificant and brief. Some patients have compared the BOTOX injection feeling to that of a “bug bite” or “prick”. Pain from the injection can be reduced by numbing the injection sites with a cold pack or anesthetic cream.

TMJ Bio-Stimulation is non-invasive and causes very little pain or discomfort.

What results will I see?

While most BOTOX patients experience notable improvement in their TMJ pain within the first few days of their first treatment, it can take up to two weeks for you to experience the full relieving results. BOTOX for TMJ is a temporary treatment, so results will fade away after about a year. Bio-stimulation, on the other hand, requires 2-3 treatments, but results will be long-lasting once the treatments are complete.

It’s important to stress that Dr. Samadian’s team will take a holistic look at every factor causing the TMJ issue, such as jaw asymmetries, bite misalignment, malocclusion, etc. and will treat the entire person rather than just concentrating on the symptom which by itself is just a side effect, not the actual cause.
